Olympic Market

The Olympic Market was one of the three markets that I visited the most often during my term in Cambodia from ’06 to ’09. This was entirely because this was where buses heading to and arriving from Prey Veng could be found in Phnom Penh. The buses rarely left on time so that there were lots of opportunity to explore the market.

I visited it this afternoon. It hasn’t changed much over the last ten years.

Olympic Market has stalls of all types but it’s primary attraction and what it’s known for are clothing and fabric.

Navigating Olympic Market can be a bit claustrophobic like many of the markets here but, unlike Russian Market, it is well lit and clean. I’m not sure how accurate this is but I’ve heard that there are around 400 vendors in Olympic Market.

The moto parking lot outside the Olympic Market. They attach a ticket to the handle and you take the matching ticket stub. I’ve heard it can be very, very difficult to get your moto back if you lose your ticket stub! Fortunately I’ve never had that experience.

Did you purchase anytime at the market, or were you just browsing? Did you take the bus, or drive your Moto?

I was looking for a DVD player for the girls – we brought all of their DVDs – but no one had one anymore. They kept on saying how everyone uses their phones now. I visited Olympic market and 11 electronics shops. I was driving the Moto. They did say that I should try at Orussey Market – the largest market in the city – or at one of the larger electronic stores. But I needed to get back for dinner.
